Emmanuel Gbede is an award-winning independent filmmaker and MFA candidate at Ohio University’s School of Film. He is known in the mainstream media as Manuel Gray. With a passion for documenting and storytelling through the lens of cinematography and photography, Emmanuel draws on a diverse background in visual art, teaching and professional film production to craft compelling  media art products.

Growing up in Madina-Accra, Gbede Emmanuel nurtured a deep interest in art which led to formal studies in visual arts during high school and a subsequent focus on film studies during undergraduate education. This foundation paired with experience in African studies and theatre, informs his approach to presenting and emphasizing historical, factual and culturally resonant depictions. He has worn many hats in the field of art – working as a Graphic designer, Photographer and Cinematographer.

Professionally, Emmanuel has shot and directed Short and Feature films, music videos, live streaming events, commercials as well as numerous documentaries. His work has been recognized by the granting of awards and  highlighting a dedication to excellence in filmmaking.

Beyond production, strong leadership and mentoring skills as both an educator and a filmmaker, Emmanuel believes that authentic documentation and storytelling holds transformative power.
